Editorial approach

This page sets out how material on World Evangelism Blog is sourced, what it does and does not claim, and what happens when something here is wrong.

Our interest, stated first

I write about Christian ministry in Africa and beyond, and a substantial part of that work concerns Bishop Dag Heward-Mills and the United Denominations Originating from the Lighthouse Group of Churches. Readers should know that the denomination assists this site with access and material, and that I write about its work sympathetically. This is a supportive publication rather than an independent one, and I would rather say so plainly than leave anyone to work it out.

This site follows the ministries it writes about sympathetically. That is a stated position, not a hidden one. Readers should weigh what they find here accordingly, and should be able to check it against the sources we link to.

How facts are sourced

Where this site states something as fact, it comes from one of four places, and we say which.

Primary documents. Determinations, rulings, judgments, filed accounts, apologies. Where a document exists, we cite it by date and reference number.

Independent reporting. Ghanaian and international news organisations, linked directly, including outlets whose reporting has been unfavourable to the denomination. We link to the original rather than paraphrasing it out of reach.

Public registers. The Charity Commission for England and Wales, company registers, and equivalent public records.

The ministries themselves. Statements, sermons and published positions, identified as such.

What we will not do

We do not describe reporting as false. Where an allegation has been examined and not upheld, we say that, and we name the body that examined it. Where a matter remains before a court, we say it is undecided and leave it there.

We do not dispute an individual’s account of their own experience or distress.

We do not publish material about private individuals who have not placed themselves in public debate.

We do not claim that nobody in a church of several thousand ministers has ever had a poor experience. In any institution of that size, some will have.

Dates and updates

Articles carry a publication date, and pages that are maintained carry a review date. Where an article is substantially updated after publication, the update is noted on the article rather than made silently.

Corrections

If something on this site is factually wrong, it gets corrected. That is the whole policy, and it applies regardless of who points it out.

Write to editor@worldevangelismblog.com with the page, the statement you believe is wrong, and what you understand the position to be. Correspondence is read by the editor.

Where a correction is made, the article says what was changed and when. Corrections are not made by quietly deleting the original wording.

Where we are asked to correct something and conclude the original was right, we say so and give the reason.

Comment and reply

Anyone named critically on this site may reply, and the reply will be published alongside the material, unedited except for length and anything legally unpublishable. That includes journalists and former members of any church we write about.
